The UCO Center for Economic Education serves as an advocate of economic and financial literacy with Oklahoma teachers and students.  The Center is affiliated with the National Council on Economic Education, a national network of centers and state councils that are recognized leaders in economic and financial education.

We help students develop the real-life skills the need to succeed:  to be able to think and chose responsibly as consumers, savers, investors, citizens, members of the workforce, and effective participants in a global economy.

We provide training and materials to help teachers incorporate economic concepts, free enterprise education, entrepreneurship and financial management skills in Oklahoma classrooms.

Funding for Center programs is provided by grants and private donations.  If you’re interested in supporting economic and financial literacy in Oklahoma, contact Sue Lynn Sasser, Center Director.

Broken Arrow and Kingfisher Take Top Honors at the
2007 Oklahoma Economics Challenge!

Broken Arrow - 1st Place - Adam Smith Division         Kingfisher - 1st Place - David Ricardo Division

High school students from Broken Arrow and Kingfisher were crowned champions in the state-level competition of the National Council on Economic Education National Economics Challenge held at the University of Central Oklahoma on Thursday.  Both teams will advance to the Heartland Regional competition April 22 in Minneapolis.

Under the supervision of teacher Larry Robinette, Broken Arrow students Reuben Dolan, Matt Grant, Rachelle Jensen and Vivian Ting edged out a student team from Lawton Eisenhower in a final quiz bowl competition to win the title in the Adam Smith division for AP economics students.

Kingfisher won the David Ricardo division for non-AP students. Team members include: Logan Pritchett, Ian Shutler, Eric Mowdy, and Jarred Darrough. Doug Jech is the group’s teacher.

Dr. Sue Lynn Sasser, director of the UCO Center for Economic Education, said she is pleased with this year’s Challenge results.

“It’s great to see kids excited about economics.  I am so pleased with the interest and quality of teams who entered the competition,” said Sasser.  “It’s the largest and most competitive event we’ve had since bringing the competition to Oklahoma.”

About 50 students from Broken Arrow, Kingfisher and Lawton Eisenhower competed in a series of written quizzes designed to test their knowledge of microeconomics, macroeconomics, and international economics.  The top two teams after the first three rounds of written tests faced off in the final quiz bowl challenge.

Local sponsors of the event include the Kirkpatrick Bank of Edmond, the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City – Oklahoma City Branch, Citizens Bank of Edmond, Oklahoma Council on Economic Education, the UCO Center for Economic Education and the UCO Economics Club.
