Economics and World History 9-12

By combining economics with world history lessons, students discover how people and nations developed as a result of making decisions based on maximizing local resources.  Students learn how people satisfied their needs and wants through history and what forces caused some nations to prosper while others declined.  World History:  Focus on Economics increases student awareness providing insight of what economics brings to history: no society can have all the material goods and services that its people would like to have.  From an economic standpoint, the history of the world is the history of people and nations making decisions about how to use their scarce resources.  Lessons correlate to Oklahoma’s PASS objectives.                                                                                   Back to top

Geography:  Focus on Economics 6-12

People look at the world around them from varying perspectives.  Economics and geography provide different frames of reference for teaching those perspectives by asking and answering questions, identifying and solving problems, and evaluating the consequences of alternative actions.  In Geography:  Focus on Economics, student’s use two specific geographic perspectives, spatial and ecological, to help them understand special patterns and processes as well as the interaction with living and nonliving elements in complex webs of relationships within nature and between nature and society.  Geography:  Focus on Economics integrates PASS standards and is designed to improve test scores in geography.                                                                                                                                     Back to top

International Economics K-12

Free trade agreements and increased competition from foreign companies have become major political issues in many national elections.  International economics has become a very important part of daily life.  Focus: International Economics highlights and examines basic economic concepts and issues in international economics.  Lessons presented are organized around several major content things themes including: global production and competition, exchange rates and issues in international finance, free trade vs. protectionism, international economic development and economic systems.  Lessons correlate with Oklahoma’s PASS objectives.                                                                                                                                                                Back to top

Mathematics and Economics (http://mathandecon.ncee.net/) 6-8 & 9-12

Mathematics and economics naturally complement each other.  OCEE offers two levels of Mathematics and Economics, 6-8 and 9-12, to help math teachers answer the proverbial question, “Why do I have to learn this?”  Both curriculum sets show how mathematical processes and concepts are used to equate classroom learning with “real world” situations in economic and personal finance applications.  All lessons correlated to NCTM, NCLB, Oklahoma PASS, and National Standards for Economics.                                                           Back to top

Stock Market Game Program 4-12

The Oklahoma Stock Market program is an excellent “hands-on” tool to actively involve students in learning economic and financial concepts.  It is generally included in math, social studies and business education classes, with students from gifted and talented programs and vocational-technical schools also participating.  In addition to learning about the American economic system, students have practical application of math, research and computer skills.  With the program, student teams invest a hypothetical $100,000 in the stock market and compete with teams from across the state.                                                                                                                                        Back to top
