Title: Overlap of general education course requirements Policy No: 1.2
Category: Programs and Curricula Effective: Fall 2002

Policy Statement: A course (or courses) may apply to both the general education and other components of a student’s degree, e.g., major, minor, and professional education, except for the B.S. in General Studies.  In the B.S. in General Studies, course work may not apply to both the general education and the major.

Background: In the 2001-2 undergraduate catalog under Academic Degree Requirements, section B, #4 states: “When applicable, a maximum of 12 semester hours credit may be applied to both General Education and to majors and minors.” UCO general education requirements for baccalaureate degrees surpass the State Regents’ minimum requirements. When majors are developed or changed, the university will monitor the potential overlap of course requirements to assure OSRHE standards are maintained.

Purpose: Change the previous limitation on the number of hours applicable to both the students’ general education and other degree components.

Implementation Date: Fall 2002
